Program Designed To Stimulate Green Building Construction, Provide Energy Efficiency Retrofits To Existing Buildings
Las Vegas, NV – August 27, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — The city of Las Vegas, in conjunction with the Green Council, NV Energy, and Home Free Nevada, has expanded its Green Building Program to include incentives to stimulate new green building construction and provide energy efficiency retrofits to existing buildings.
As a part of this effort, the city of Las Vegas has initiated a Green Building Rebate Program. The program provides rebates for new construction and existing commercial and residential retrofits for builders who construct buildings or projects to one of the following green building program standards:
- Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED).
- The Southern Nevada Green Building Partnership.
- Green Globes.
- NV Energy’s Energy Plus New Homes program.
- NV Energy’s Sure Bet program.
Rebates will be available for expedited plans checks, building permit fees and certifications. In addition, the building or project will be recognized on the city’s Web site or in future promotional materials.
Newly constructed buildings or projects that begin after July 1, 2009, are eligible. The builder chooses the respective green building program and notifies the city of its intent to participate. Upon successful completion of the program, the builder requests the eligible rebates, which will be paid to the builder. The Las Vegas City Council has established a special green building revenue fund so rebates will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis contingent upon fund availability.
The city of Las Vegas has a number of sustainability programs. Sustainability is defined by the city as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. This includes numerous “green” efforts such as constructing new buildings to LEED standards, water conservation, recycling, greater energy efficiency, just to name a few.
In fact, Las Vegas was named the American City of the Year by the World Leadership Forum in 2007, largely due to its leadership in sustainability. Specifically, the city was honored for operating 90 percent of the city fleet on alternative fuels and sustainability concepts built into the Centennial Hills master-planned recreational campus. The World Leadership Forum is an international competition among hundreds of cities from around the globe.
