Washington, D.C. – July 18, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today announced that three organizations in Nevada will receive more than $1.8 million in federal grant funding through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to aid homeless Clark County veterans in need of housing.
“After putting their lives on the line in the service of our nation, no veteran in Nevada should be sleeping on the streets,” said Berkley. “This funding will help keep our promise to those who served in America’s armed forces by ensuring that these brave men and women can find permanent homes.”
Berkley has a long record of support for programs that fund work to prevent veterans and their families from becoming homeless.
“I am proud of my strong record of support for grant funding to groups like U.S. VETS, the Urban League and the Salvation Army that are doing amazing work to help our homeless Nevada veterans and their families,” said Berkley.
Funding has been awarded to the following Clark County organizations to serve a designated number of households:
United States Veterans Initiative (U.S. VETS): $600,000 160 households in Clark County
The Salvation Army: $228,398 120 households in Clark County
Las Vegas Clark County Urban League: $1,000,000 400 households in Clark County
The homeless prevention grants for Nevada were awarded under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. Through the SSVF Program (www.va.gov/homeless/ssvf.asp) VA aims to improve very low-income Veteran families’ housing stability. Grantees provide supportive services to very low-income Veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing.
Funding will be utilized by the non-profit organizations to provide services to very low-income Veteran families living in — or transitioning to — permanent housing. Organizations provide a range of services that promote housing stability including outreach, case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits and other aid. Groups serving Clark County can offer temporary financial assistance on behalf of Veterans for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs.
