Extreme Heat Prompting Opening of Additional Cooling Stations For The Homeless
Las Vegas, NV – June 4, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — As temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 105 degrees through June 9, additional cooling stations will be open to the public in an effort to move the homeless and other individuals out of the heat and keep them hydrated so they do not get sick.
The cooling stations are in addition to the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition’s Inclement Weather Shelter Program, which provides seasonal shelter on an as-needed basis. The program also provides funding for long-term day shelters during the summer. The National Weather Service determines what constitutes hazardous weather conditions. The following locations are open today through June 9:
- Catholic Charities, 1501 N. Las Vegas Blvd., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.*
- Salvation Army, 31 W. Owens Ave., 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.*
- Shade Tree, 1 W. Owens Ave., 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.*
- Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St., 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
- Hollywood Recreation Center, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd., 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
- Walnut Recreation Center, 3075 N. Walnut Ave., 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
- Valley View Recreation Center, 500 Harris St. Henderson, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
- Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
- Dr. William U. Pearson Community Center, 1625 West Carey Ave., 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
- Dula Gymnasium, 441 East Bonanza Road, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
- Islamic Society of Nevada, 4730 E. Desert Inn Road, 11 a.m. 7 p.m. each day.
Anyone in need of a cooling station is encouraged to dial 2-1-1 from any pay phone to find the nearest cooling station or go online.
