More Than $6.5 Million In Grants For Affordable Housing, Community Development And Homeless Assistance Approved By Las Vegas City Council
Las Vegas, NV – March 23, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Recommendations to use more than $6.5 million in grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for affordable housing, community development and homeless assistance received approval from the Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday.
The Community Development Recommending Board that reviews the grant applications for the city gave priority consideration to projects and/or programs that address city priorities including: homeless prevention/outreach, intervention services with a preference towards veterans, men with children and women with children; seniors with a focus on maintaining independence; persons with special needs; and youth programs that focus on academic skills and early childhood development.
The funding includes:
- $5,068,721 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
- $952,000 in Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) funds.
- $300,000 in HOME Investment Partnership Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) funds.
- $226,273 in Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) funds.
In keeping with city priorities, this funding will go to projects/programs including:
- 17 projects/programs that provide homeless services.
- 3 projects/programs that provide senior related services.
- 11 projects/programs that provide services for the special needs population.
- 15 project/programs that provide youth oriented programs/services.
The city receives this federal funding each year, which is made available to various agencies through an application process. Applications for the grants are accepted annually in the summer by the city of Las Vegas. A community board reviews the applications and makes recommendations to the council. The city’s Neighborhood Services Department administers the grants.
