“It’s come to the attention of State Treasurers across the nation that fraudulent emails are being sent to people stating that the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) is holding a large inheritance in the email recipient’s name, and that all you have to do to claim the property is provide personal identifying information,” Marshall said. “First of all, you should never provide personal information in response to any unsolicited email or phone call. In this particular case, NAUPA does not hold unclaimed property proceeds; that is the sole duty of individual states through their State Treasurer or another state government office.”

Marshall encourages people who may receive a deceptive email relating to unclaimed property to forward that email to her office at unclaimedproperty (at) nevadatreasurer (dot) gov.

“My office takes great pride in returning unclaimed property to rightful owners or heirs, and there is never a charge,” Marshall said. “Last year, we returned more than $33 million, and we are safeguarding another $500 million. It’s easy to see if we might be holding property in your name or in the name of a family member. Simply go to https://NevadaTreasurer.gov, click on the yellow ‘Search for Unclaimed Property’ box, type in your name and hit ‘Search.’
