City Of Las Vegas To Use Federal Grants To Fund Homeless Services, Affordable Housing And Community Development
More Than $6.8 Million Received From U.S. Department of Housing And Urban Development
April 13, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The city of Las Vegas will use more than $6.8 in grant funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for affordable housing, community development and homeless assistance. The Las Vegas City Council at last week’s meeting approved plans for the grants to be used to fund at least 39 projects/programs including:
• 13 projects/programs that provide for homeless services;
• 7 projects/programs that provide for senior-related services;
• 9 projects/programs that provide services for special needs populations; and
• 10 projects/programs that provide youth-oriented programs/services.
The Community Development Recommending Board that reviews the grant applications for the city gave priority consideration to projects and/or programs that address city priorities, including homeless prevention/outreach; intervention services with a preference toward veterans, men with children and women with children; seniors, with a focus on maintaining independence; persons with special needs; and youth programs that focus on academic skills and early-childhood development.
The funding includes:
• $5,540,639 in Community Development Block Grant funds;
• $1,098,706 in Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS funds; and
• $226,273 in Emergency Shelter Grant funds.
The city receives federal funding each year and makes it available to various agencies through an application process. Applications for the grants are accepted annually in the summer by the city of Las Vegas. A community board reviews the applications and makes recommendations to the Las Vegas City Council. The city’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department administers the grants.
