High School Students To Volunteer At Senior Citizens Housing Site To Create Community Garden Walkway

-

Las Vegas, NV – April 21, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Students from Arbor View High School’s Senior Studies class and the school’s baseball team are coming together with city staff and community volunteers to build a cement walkway in Archie C. Grant Park’s community garden. Many residents of this senior citizen housing authority site are wheelchair-bound and/or require special assistance to enter the garden area and participate in special activities. In addition to many volunteer hours, these students have been awarded a grant from the city of Las Vegas’ Neighborhood Services Youth Neighborhood Association Partnership Program (YNAPP) to pay for costs associated with this project.

The community garden event will also be done in conjunction with volunteers and donors from Performance Ready Mix, Western States Company, and the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services’ Leisure-On-The-Go program for seniors. Listed below are the event dates and times.

  • Preparation Day
    Saturday, May 1, 2010, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Archie C. Grant Park, 1720 Searles Ave.
The garden beds will be prepped for the walkway.
  • Community Garden Walkway Day
    Saturday, May 8, 2010, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Archie C. Grant Park, 1720 Searles Ave.
The cement walkway will be poured and volunteers will be constructing an on-site shed for storage of gardening supplies.

The YNAPP Grant provides up to $1,000 for projects that are designed and carried out by young people. They put their ideas to work to address important neighborhood and community needs. Projects are neighborhood-based and led by neighborhood youth with a realistic budget and solid plans. Groups must match the grants with cash, volunteer labor donations or supplies. Performance Ready Mix and Western States Company have matched the $1,000 grant with in-kind donations that is enabling a purchase of a shed to hold all the garden supplies. The Community Garden project will provide the city of Las Vegas with more than $15,333 in volunteer hours, in-kind support and donated labor.
