New Shade Canopies And Walkway Lighting Also To Be Added During Construction
WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 3, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — The public is invited to join Ward 3 Councilman Bob Coffin and Las Vegas City Manager Betsy Fretwell for a groundbreaking at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, for a new skatepark to be added to the Justice Myron E. Leavitt and Jaycee Community Park, located at Eastern and East St. Louis avenues.
The 12,000-square-foot skatepark will be lit for nighttime use. Other park improvements to be constructed at the same time include shade canopies over the horseshoe and bocce courts and modern LED lighting for the walkways. The horseshoe, bocce and shuffleboard courts will be closed during shade canopy construction.

“We’re looking forward to adding a new skatepark to this popular urban park, as well as additional shade and lighting,” Councilman Coffin said. “This park provides many recreational opportunities for residents from the surrounding neighborhoods, and these additions will make it even better.”
The $1.3 million budgeted for the project is provided through Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act funds. This act allows money from Nevada federal land sales to be used in the state for park and trail projects.
SITE Design Group was responsible for the skatepark design, in cooperation with city staff. Construction is expected to begin in January 2014 and be completed in July 2014 by CORE Construction.
In addition to the features already mentioned, the 18.4-acre park also offers a lighted artificial-turf soccer field; two playground areas; a dog park with three dog runs; fitness course equipment; walking path; picnic shelters; restrooms; open turf; and a water play feature.
